Magnesium is the fourth most abundant mineral in the body and is essential to good health. One study, sponsored by the National Institutes of Health shows that 68% of Americans are magnesium deficient, while other experts believe that the number could be closer to 80%. The typical American diet of many processed and refined foods, convenience foods, and junk foods leads to serious magnesium deficiencies.*
Medical conditions that can result from magnesium deficiencies include hypertension, heart arrhythmias, diabetes, fibromyalgia, PMS, chronic pain, Restless Leg Syndrome and sleep disorders, among many others. Magnesium glycinate is the preferred form of magnesium because it is highly absorbable and causes fewer GI issues than other forms.
Because magnesium is necessary for proper muscle, nerve, and enzyme function, it is often recommended as a supplement for patients suffering from these types of disorders. In a German study, adults who took 600mg magnesium daily for a month had a 42% drop in migraine headache frequency, duration, and intensity. This dosage has also been found to be helpful in relieving pain from leg and muscle cramps, restless legs andfibromyalgia. Other studies have found magnesium supplementation to be beneficial in patients suffering from PMS as well as depression.*
