Urinary incontinence is a very common, distressing, and unsanitary problem in dogs and cats. It is one of the most common reasons for euthanasia among pets. Fortunately, with the help of a compounding pharmacy, there are many options available to pet owners who are dealing with this problem. Many times incontinence can be successfully treated and euthanasia avoided.
The drug of choice for estrogen-receptive urinary incontinence is DES (diethylstilbestrol). It is a synthetic estrogen that is well absorbed orally in dogs. DES was removed from the human market years ago and is not available in the veterinary market. Fortunately, compounding pharmacies are able to provide this medication in the exact dose of DES needed and can also counsel owners on the proper handling and administration of DES.
Bethanecol (urecholine) is available as a compounded medication for pets that need increased bladder tone. The aim is to increase bladder contractions and prevent overflow incontinence.
Urethral incompetence is treated with drugs that increase urethral sphincter tone (phenylpropanolamine, ephedrine, testosterone cipionate). When urethral relaxation is desired, drugs that decrease sphincter tone are used, such as phenoxybenzamine and diazepam.
