Adrenal fatigue is a collection of signs and symptoms caused by low levels of cortisol due to underperforming or failing adrenal glands. It is associated with prolonged periods of stress. Whether it is physical stress, such as surgery, chronic illness, or infection, or mental stress such as grief, job loss, or post traumatic stress disorder, the body reacts in the same manner.
There are 3 stages of adrenal fatigue. Stage 1 is the "alarm reaction" when the body prepares for action with a "fight or flight" response. Stage 2 is the "stage of resisitance" when the body begins to adapt to the stressor in order to reduce its effect on the body. Stage 3 is the "stage of exhaustion" at which point the body cannot resist the stressor anymore and collapses. Symptoms of adrenal fatigue include salt cravings, fatigue not relieved by sleep, decreased sex drive, low energy in the afternoon, depression, slow recovery from illness or injury, reliance on caffeine for energy, weight gain, and low body temperature.
The goal of treating adrenal fatigue is to essentially regenerate the adrenal glands. Typically, the strategy is 3-fold, 1) remove the stressor, 2) give the adrenals rest and 3) supplement the adrenal gland. It is important to treat the whole person and all contributing and concomitant conditions. Lifestyle changes should include decreasing caffeine consumption, improving the diet (particularly decreasing sugar intake and increasing fiber intake), learning relaxation techniques, adding daily exercise, and getting adequate sleep.
Another aspect of healing the adrenals is to supplement them with nutrients they may be deficient in. There are many supplements available that are fomulated specifically for both relieving and rebuilding the adrenals. These often include a combination of Vitamins C, E, and B complex, as well as magnesium, trace minerals, and SAMe. Under the supervision of a physician, hormone supplementation with DHEA, Pregnenolone, Progesterone, and Hydrocortisone may offer some benefits.
It is important to note that patients may require treatment for 6 months to 2 years. For more information on treating adrenal fatigue, call our nearest location or visit us at www.pharmacyinnovations.net.
